The first known cave-diving expedition to the Callao Caves took place only in 1997. It discovered cave formations in still pristine condition.

On 11 hectares (27 acres) of rolling terrain overlooking the river can be found Iguig Calvary Hills. Arranged across the undulating site are life-sized concrete structures depicting Christ and the Fourteen Stations of the Cross amid a cluster of Spanish relics such as a brick stairway, a three-centuries-old well, and Dominican convent ruins.

North to Aparri and Fuga Island

At the northern end of the valley, past Gattaran, site of Tanlagan Falls, lies Camalaniugan, where the aptly named Bell of Antiquity is located. It dates back to 1595.

On the coast, Aparri has a following for marlin and sailfish fishing. Around town, the coastline spreads out into a run of beaches, tangled estuaries, and swamps. Here, ancient tribes once wove cloth, baked clay, and fashioned fishing and hunting implements from the bamboo that grew in their forests.
